The Rekai Centre at Sherbourne Place

This small intimate 126 bed long term care home is located in the heart of downtown Toronto and overlooks historic Allan Gardens and its magnificent greenhouses.  The Rekai Centre at Sherbourne Place offers 5 private rooms with the remainder of the residents either living in a semi-private or 4 person rooms. Working closely with St. Michael’s Hospital, we also provide 6 beds offering peritoneal dialysis to individuals requiring this support in the community.

As you walk through the front door of The Rekai Centre at Sherbourne Place you will sense the difference. Our home exudes warmth, the staff appears unrushed and everyone knows everyone else.
In this diverse and eclectic home, we foster the history and heritage of each of our residents.

The respect for cultural values means that you will be able to celebrate your culture, traditions and enjoy traditional foods from time to time.

With over 20 years of experience and history it is easy to be enveloped by the comfort and care that is provided.

Rebuilding of The Rekai Centre at Sherboune Place

In 1988, The Rekai Centres, Canada’s first multicultural nursing home opened it’s doors.  It was considered a state-of-the-art home providing resident care and service to 126 residents.  Initially the home welcomed a large number of Canadians of Hungarian and East European background.  Today over 31% of the residents are of Chinese background reflecting the change in demographics in the City of Toronto.  The home is now considered a Class “C” building in need of rebuilding to reflect today’s standards in terms of room size for the residents.  Many of the rooms are the old “ward” style with four residents sharing one room.

In February 2010, the Minister of Health and Long Term Care announced that we would receive funding to permit a rebuild of The Rekai Centre at Sherbourne Place.

We can not rebuild The Rekai Centre at Sherbourne Place on the current site as the site is too small to reflect today’s standards for the residents.  We are now searching for a site as close as possible to the current The Rekai Centre at Sherbourne Place on which to build a new home.

Updates will be posted here as information becomes available.
